Is The Rumored Xbox 360 Integration With Windows 8 A Good Idea?

February 27, 2012 by Raj Agrawal Leave a Comment

Windows 8 is going to be a very unusual operating system. The main crowd Microsoft seems to be targeting are the ones who fancy touch systems, over the traditional mouse-keyboard layout. And as we know, most computer users the world over prefer the mouse keyboard layout. Then how does Microsoft expect users to switch over to Windows 8, when Windows 7 is still already capable and popular? If the rumors are to be believed, Microsoft might have realized this potential flaw in the strategy, and might be trying to pack a bigger punch by integrating the Xbox 360 into Windows 8. But, is it a good idea?

Xbox 360
Xbox 360 branding

If you’re a PC user, of course it is. There may be many instances where you might have wanted a particular exclusive on your PC, or the game might have been designed with the Consoles in mind, and must have been an abysmal port on the PC, of which there are many. Well, now you can enjoy all those games without having to buy a new Console. If the rumors are true, then there might be no reason for a PC gamer to buy a Microsoft Console, at least until the next Xbox comes out.

One thing really puzzles me; where does Microsoft benefit from all of this? It’s not like Microsoft suddenly woke up with an earth shattering epiphany to give back something to the society. That never happens. Epiphanies are the result of gradual behavioral change, and nothing Microsoft has done recently has been suggestive of the same. They obviously might be trying to lure people into switching over from Windows 7 by using the Xbox integration as a marketing tool. Even then, wouldn’t it be kicking yourself in the foot? The PS2 still sells a respectable amount of units worldwide, and there’s no reason not to believe that the Xbox 360 will keep selling even after the Xbox 720 arrives.

The only logical reason I can think of is the royalties that Microsoft will earn from each game sold – they’ll be pure profit. This money won’t go into making systems at a loss, which was the case with the Xbox 360. Here, people are basically getting a Console and a PC for the price of a PC. Many people who download pirated versions of Windows might be tempted to prefer an original copy, since Microsoft will obviously employ some sort of protection to ensure that pirates will not be able to use the Console. Still, leaving an entire brand as redundant doesn’t seem like a pragmatic decision, whatever the benefits might seem.

All this leads me to believe that this rumor will not see the light of reality. There may be some sort of compromise though, like many of the 360 games coming to the PC. But, I don’t see Microsoft giving away a free Xbox 360 with every copy of Windows 8 it sells.

Can Video Game Storytelling Ever Match A Good Movie?

January 19, 2012 by Raj Agrawal Leave a Comment

Games are not often considered the best medium to tell a good story. Whenever you, irrespective of whether you’re a gamer or not, think of a good story, it usually stems from a favorite book or movie. It is often the case that when we play games, we hardly pay attention to the world, the history of the game world, and how you fit in into all of it. Stories stem from the mind’s ability to create a situation where there is a prologue, an epilogue, a start, an end, and everything in between. When you think of a game, you think about graphics, sound, action, interaction and then the story, which sadly for the majority of games out there is an afterthought.

A good story doesn’t necessarily ensure a good game, but it does serve as a time well spent when other mechanics may fail. Not many games have been able to mix story and gameplay into a good gaming experience, but those that have, have become masterpieces. And that is what separates great games from masterpieces most of the time – the story. Below is a list of games I have played which have blended a good gaming experience with a good story. Most of these games will be known to the majority, for obvious reasons.

Bioshock

Bioshock

This is the first name that came to my mind when i thought of writing this article. Bioshock is one of the few games which has its entire game mechanics built around the story. The big daddies and their relationships with the little sisters, the underwater dystopia, the civil war over the fight of adam, all talk of a fantastic idea gone tragically wrong. And this is what brings out feelings of sadness as you explore the world, feelings which are seldom experienced while playing games.

Metal Gear Solid

Okay, anyone who has ever owned a Playstation console will agree with this one. The metal gear series is one of the few series of games which has blended fantasy and tactical action with a gritty and gripping story, and blended them so well. A testimony to the greatness of this series are the cut-scenes, some of which can last for an hour. But you don’t see many people complaining about them, do you?

Half life

Out of all the game characters I love, the one I pity the most has to be Gordon Freeman. The guy almost brought the world to an end, and although it was more of an accident, he now has to shoulder the responsibility to free it of the combine. And what primary weapon does he get to meet this task? – a crowbar! And the poor bloke doesn’t ever complain about it. It’s not a very original story; alien invasion stories stopped being original a long time back. But its told very well; so well in fact that you will start empathizing with the characters and feel bad about them as the story progresses.

Portal

Portal

Valve is addicted to making characters that find themselves in hopeless situations but don’t ever utter a word to show their discontent, and portal is another shining example of this. Portal has one of the most unique stories ever told in any medium of entertainment. What starts as a puzzle game will probably end up shocking you and leaving you disturbed. The second game loses its shock factor, but makes up for it for an even better story, which provides us with a better insight of the world of Aperture Science. For all the unique puzzle mechanics that this game boasts of, it’s the story that has made it the masterpiece that it is.

These are just a few examples of video games which can tell a good story. Games such as the Zelda series, GTA series, heavy rain, grim fandango, planetscape: torment, Baldurs gate, all have amazing stories which up the immersion factor by several notches. Which brings us back to the all important question – Can video game story telling match its movie counterpart? I would say not yet. Movies have had that 100-150 years head-start in which they have evolved in the way stories are told and characters are portrayed. Movies like Schindlers list, the Shawshank Redemption, the godfather all exemplify great stories with great acting, something which games haven’t achieved yet.

Videogames have characters, yes, but none of them are as fleshed out as characters in movies. We haven’t seen a videogame counterpart of heath ledger’s joker or hannibal lecter in a video game; such characters make the story come to life, and videogames just haven’t reached there yet. But they’re getting there, that’s for sure. With games like L.A. Noire and Mass Effect, which have changed the way people have conversations in video games, we’re getting to the point where conversations and cut-scenes will have as much of an effect on the player as blowing up the town of Megaton in Fallout 3 has. Stories are an important part of video games, but only when stories and characters occupy a more pivotal role in video game design, only then can we make a fair comparison. And with games like Uncharted doing exactly so, I don’t think that time is far off.

What Is The Best FPS Of All Time?

January 10, 2012 by Raj Agrawal 3 Comments

The first person shooter genre is probably the most popular in gaming. Even after almost 10 years after its release, people still play Counter Strike. Call of Duty and Battlefield series of games are breaking sales records year after year. There have been enough FPS games in the past ten years to eclipse all the other genres in gaming. So the obvious difficulty i’m having in choosing the best FPS game ever made shouldn’t come as a surprise to many.

call of duty 4
Call of Duty 4

The FPS genre has undergone a severe transition over the years from being single player focused to multiplayer focused. Call of Duty and Battlefield 3 both have single player campaigns, but they’re an afterthought when compared to the excellent multiplayer offerings. This makes the decision to find the best game even more difficult. One side you have games which rely heavily on single player such as Half life 2. On the other side you have multiplayer games like Modern Warfare which have changed the scope of multiplayer games.

Off the top of my head I can list the following games that thoroughly deserve the crown:-

  • Half Life
  • Half Life 2
  • Bioshock
  • Halo
  • Halo 2
  • Unreal Tournament 2004
  • Doom
  • Call of Duty 4 : Modern Warfare
  • Battlefield 2
  • Call of Duty

All of the above are shining examples of what a good FPS must be. Games like Unreal Tournament and Modern Warfare have changed the multiplayer landscape, whereas Bioshock and Halo have redefined single player gameplay. To choose one best game out of these would be to seriously insult the others since the competition is so close. But, to not chose even one would completely betray the purpose of writing this article. Hence I shall pick two best games which i think have defined FPS gaming. And when I say defined FPS gaming, I do not imply popularity, in which case Modern Warfare and Halo would be runaway winners; it’s how much they have affected FPS game development on an evolutionary scale, and how they have changed the way players look at first person shooters.

Half Life 2

half life 2
Half Life 2

The original half life was sort of an evolution in the FPS landscape. It did nothing special, but whatever it did, it did perfectly. Well almost perfectly, otherwise I wouldn’t pick the sequel above it. Half Life 2 was something completely different. It’s an unrelenting campaign from start to finish. It pauses without stopping and rushes without hurrying. Couple this perfect pacing with a good story and some new fantastic gimmicks such as the gravity gun and physics puzzles, and you have a winner. But HL2 was much more than that; one which relies more on versatility than anything else. What i most remember the game for is its variety in levels. You won’t play the same time of environment in this game for more than 3-4 hours. And it’s a long game which will last you almost 20-25 hours. How can a game have all of these features and not be one of the best games of all time. I thought the same, and frankly I couldn’t come up with one reason about why it deserves anything less.

Bioshock

Bioshock

I was torn between Bioshock and Modern Warfare for this spot, but in the end Bioshock just about managed to nudge ahead. Storytelling in videogames have never been good enough to compete with movies, but this game come scarily close. And the story has a very deep impact on the game world and the characters. There’s much to talk about this game, but most of it will serve as a spoiler. This is one game which will constantly surprise and awe you, and I intend to keep it that way. And as far as twists go, this one is right up there with the best.

Well thats my two cents. What do you people think about these choices? Whats your favorite FPS of all time?
